Our Reception children have been busy little scientists this week, creating their very own winter‑themed bath bombs!
The room was full of excitement as the children mixed ingredients, predicted what might happen, and watched in amazement as their bath bombs fizzed, bubbled and transformed before their eyes.
This hands‑on investigation gave the children at Blackbrook Nursery a fantastic opportunity to explore cause and effect. They carefully observed the changes that happened when the ingredients were combined — noticing the fizzing, listening to the crackling sounds and feeling the different textures as the mixture changed. These real‑life scientific moments encouraged curiosity and supported their understanding of how materials behave.
This activity linked beautifully to the EYFS area of Understanding the World, giving children a practical introduction to simple chemical reactions in a way that was meaningful, safe and exciting. They experimented with powders, liquids and scents, gaining an early appreciation of how materials can change when mixed together.
We also supported several other areas of learning:
✨ Physical Development – Children used controlled movements to scoop, pour, stir and shape their mixtures, helping strengthen fine‑motor skills.
✨ Communication and Language – The room was full of brilliant conversations as children shared ideas, made predictions and used new scientific vocabulary such as dissolve, reaction, mixture and fizz.
✨ Mathematics – There were plenty of opportunities to practise early maths skills as children counted spoonfuls, compared quantities and followed simple measurements to create their bath bombs successfully.
Most importantly, the children approached the activity with confidence, curiosity and creativity, showing pride in what they made and a real interest in the science behind it.
