This afternoon, the Reception children at The Abbey Nursery took part in a fantastic activity where they created their very own face puzzles!

The room was filled with concentration, curiosity and plenty of proud smiles as the children explored the different puzzle pieces and worked out how to build a face that looked just right to them.

The children showed wonderful listening skills as Ashleigh carefully modeled how to complete the activity. They watched closely, followed each step, and then confidently had a go themselves. Using their problem‑solving skills, they mixed, matched, adjusted and switched around the pieces until they felt their creation was complete. Their perseverance and independence really shone through! 🙂

This simple yet highly effective activity supported so many areas of learning:

Celebrating differences – The children explored a variety of facial features, hair types and expressions, helping them recognise and appreciate that everyone is unique.

Fine motor development – Picking up, rotating and placing the puzzle pieces helped strengthen those important little muscles used for writing, dressing and daily independence.

Communication and language – As the children discussed their choices, described the features and chatted with friends about their creations, they developed vocabulary and expressive language.

‘Can‑do’ attitude – Each child approached the activity with determination, showing confidence and pride in their ability to complete the task.

The activity was the perfect blend of creativity, learning and self‑expression — and the children absolutely loved seeing their final face puzzles come together! Find out more about The Abbey Nursery.

A wonderful afternoon celebrating individuality, confidence and hands‑on learning! 💛✨
