The Abbey Nursery Reception children have been having an absolute blast exploring a wonderfully simple yet completely captivating activity, passing “snowy” shredded paper to one another! What looks like playful winter chaos is actually a rich learning experience designed to support multiple areas of development within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

The children eagerly took turns scooping, sprinkling, passing, and giggling their way through the activity, all while developing essential early learning skills. Sensory play like this provides opportunities for communication, cooperation, exploration, and creativity—all wrapped up in snowy fun!

Through this hands‑on experience, children were developing:

  • Communication and language skills as they talk, listen and follow instructions
  • Physical development through hand–eye coordination and fine motor control
  • Personal, social and emotional skills by taking turns and working together
  • Expressive arts and design as they explore textures and imaginative play

What’s truly magical is that sometimes the simplest activities spark the biggest learning moments. Children thrive when they can explore freely, work together, and experience the world through touch and play—and today was the perfect example of just that!

We can’t wait to see what our next sensory adventure will be!
